Castelsardo is a town overlooking the sea on the north coast of the province of Sassari. In Castelsardo, four-voice singing has an ancient and well documented history. Castelsardo’s sacred songs are well known and appreciated, performed by the singers of the brotherhood of the Holy Cross, accompanying the rites of paraliturgy and in particular in Holy Week.
The profane singing of the "bogi a passu", and "lu baddittu" that accompanie dances was, up to the 50s of the last century, performed with the guttural voices of contra and bassu, while today it is performed with a natural emission by all four voices.
Census
The number of singers surveyed is 45 and the practice of singing is very much alive both in the rites related to paraliturgy and in the convivial events of Castelsardo’s people.
